Built around 1870 by Peter Austin Gates and Paulina Hamilton Nix Gates, the cabin was originally used as a “weaning cabin” (first home) for their children. It served as a home up to 1946 when it then began seeing service as a storage shed and hay barn. Then in 1992 it was cleaned out and stripped down and placed on the National Register of Historic Places along with the Gates Barn (c:1870) and the Helm-Blair House (c:1900)
Restoration
Full scale restoration began in the spring of 1998 and was completed in August of 1999.
